Driving pumps with the sun
An irrigation inverter converts the DC power from the panels into the frequency and voltage suited to the pump motor, carrying out well or tank irrigation without the grid or while supporting the grid. The TommaTech irrigation inverters in the catalog work with a 900 VDC input and a 3-phase 380 VAC output; they include models going up to the 110, 132 and 160 kW class.
Selection criteria
- Pump power: The kW or HP value of the pump motor must be less than or equal to the inverter power.
- Panel array: The number of series panels is determined with the 900 VDC limit of the DC input voltage in mind.
- Pump type: Settings may differ for a submersible pump, centrifugal pump or booster.
- Protection functions: Protections such as dry-run, overcurrent and tank-full detection are important for operational safety.
Agricultural use in Antalya
In a region where citrus and vegetable production is intense and irrigation demand peaks in summer, solar irradiation and water demand rise in the same season. This makes solar irrigation systems sensible. For ready-made packages, you can look at the irrigation systems page.
Operation and protection
Irrigation inverters keep the system running by adjusting the pump frequency even as sunlight changes. During the day, the flow rate changes with irradiation. Auxiliary equipment such as a tank level switch and a dry-run sensor is recommended for safe operation of the system.
If the distance between the well and the panel area is large, the DC cable cross-section is increased according to voltage drop. Soft start or frequency limits for the pump are set in the inverter settings to reduce mechanical wear. If grid support is wanted, hybrid operation options should be reviewed on the product page.
In high-power systems, cooling and dust protection inside the panel are also important; in the irrigation season, dust and temperature in the field environment can affect the device's long-term performance.
