Solar Panel Lifespan: Annual Degradation and Warranty Explained

Solar panel lifespan is not the same as warranty period. We explain annual degradation, the 30-year performance warranty and a 25-30 year production projection for Antalya.

Short answer

Solar panel lifespan is the time a panel keeps producing at usable power and is not the same as the warranty period. For example, a TommaTech 605 W TOPCon panel has a 15-year product and 30-year performance warranty; power falls from 99% in year 1 to 87.4% in year 30, about 0.4% a year. In Antalya, high heat and salty air can influence this.

Key takeaways

  • According to the TommaTech TT605-144TN10 datasheet, the linear performance warranty falls from 99% in year 1 to 87.4% in year 30; that means a decline of about 0.4% a year (calculation).
  • Product warranty and performance warranty differ: the 144TN model has 15 years product and 30 years performance; the double-glass G2G model has a 25-year product warranty.
  • NREL's 2012 literature review found median degradation of 0.5% a year for field modules; this is an older study.
  • Inverters and batteries carry shorter warranties than panels: 5 years standard for TommaTech inverters and 60 months for LV batteries; plan a replacement allowance.
  • In licence-exempt applications, main equipment must have been manufactured within the last five years; an application cannot be made with old panels.

The short answer on solar panel lifespan is this: panels most often produce for 25-30 years or longer, but their power declines very slightly every year. Because this decline is not zero, there is a difference between "lifespan" and "warranty period". Manufacturers commit to a panel working flawlessly through the product warranty and to a minimum power level through the performance warranty. In this article we explain annual efficiency loss (degradation), the types of warranty and the influence of Antalya conditions with datasheet data. We give no firm lifespan promise; we only report documented values.

Solar panel lifespan and warranty period are not the same thing

A warranty is the period the manufacturer commits to; the panel may keep working after that period. For example, TommaTech's 605 W TOPCon models (TT605-144TN10) have a 15-year product and 30-year performance warranty. In the double-glass (G2G) bifacial model, the product warranty is 25 years and the performance warranty is again 30 years. The statement "panels have a 25-year product warranty" is therefore not correct for every product; you need to check the document model by model.

ComponentExample warranty (per manufacturer document)What it means

How does annual efficiency loss work over a solar panel's lifespan?

A panel's power falls quickly in the first year and more slowly in later years. Datasheets show this with a linear warranty graph. According to the TommaTech 144TN datasheet, power falling from 99% in year 1 to 87.4% in year 30 means a decline of about 0.4% a year (calculation). The Jinko Tiger Neo TOPCon model has similar values: 99% in year 1, then 0.40% a year, 87.4% in year 30. In the LONGi Hi-MO 5 model, first-year degradation is less than 2%, 0.45% a year in years 2-30, and 84.95% is guaranteed in year 30.

According to these two datasheets, first-year and annual degradation are lower in TOPCon; however, this is only a comparison of two models, so do not generalise to all products. Datasheet values show the guaranteed lower limit; real degradation can be above or below it. In NREL's 2012 literature review (Jordan and Kurtz), which looked at field data, median degradation for field modules was found to be 0.5% a year. This is an older study and may not exactly represent today's TOPCon panels. For details on TOPCon technology, see our article on what a TOPCon panel is.

A 30-year projection: the 605 W panel example

The table below interprets the TommaTech 144TN linear performance warranty (99% in year 1, 87.4% in year 30) as linear between years. With the assumption of a decline of about 0.4% a year, the power and energy projection of a 605 Wp panel is as follows. The energy values were found by scaling PVGIS's 1,656 kWh/kWp for central Antalya by these percentages; PVGIS itself does not include degradation.

YearGuaranteed power ratioPower of a 605 Wp panelAnnual production per kWp
199.0%about 599 Wabout 1,639 kWh
1095.4%about 577 Wabout 1,580 kWh
2091.4%about 553 Wabout 1,514 kWh
2589.4%about 541 Wabout 1,481 kWh
3087.4%about 529 Wabout 1,447 kWh

In this projection the average power ratio over 30 years is about 93.2%; that means a total production of about 46,300 kWh over 30 years per kWp (1,656 x 0.932 x 30; calculation). Real production varies with factors such as shading, soiling, temperature and inverter efficiency. When calculating the payback of the investment, you can use this slow decline as a scenario input; for the method, see our article on how to calculate the payback period of solar energy.

How do Antalya conditions affect solar panel lifespan?

Temperature

In Antalya the July average maximum temperature is 34.2 °C and the record temperature 45.0 °C (MGM, the Turkish State Meteorological Service, 1930-2025). High temperature temporarily lowers panel power; this is not permanent ageing but a loss tied to operating conditions. By a calculation using the NOCT approach, with ambient 34 °C and irradiance 1000 W/m², cell temperature is about 65 °C; the power loss relative to STC is about 12% for TOPCon with a −0.30 %/°C coefficient and about 13.6% for PERC with −0.34 %/°C (calculation, not measurement). Mounting that leaves airflow behind the panel reduces this effect. For climate details, see our article on how Antalya's climate affects solar panels.

Salty air, wind and snow

On rooftops in coastal Konyaaltı, Kaş and Alanya, salty air increases the risk of corrosion in the frame, fasteners and mounting structure. The durability of the mounting material therefore matters. According to MGM, the fastest wind in Antalya has been 43.2 m/s and the highest snow depth 5 cm; the TommaTech datasheet states a wind load of 2400 Pa and a snow load of 5400 Pa for the panel. The panel must be mounted on a fire-resistant surface with sufficient ventilation left behind it; installation contrary to the installation manual voids the warranty. Hail, storm and tornado events are recorded on the west coast; however, since there is no verified statistic for writing a numerical hail risk by province, the risk should be assessed in terms of insurance and installation quality.

The lifespan of components other than the panel

What determines the system's lifespan is often not the panel but the inverter. The standard warranty on TommaTech inverters is 5 years; it is therefore sensible to plan at least one inverter replacement over a 25-30 year project. On Instagram, Solar Nexo shared the replacement of 5 faulty inverters at an existing solar power plant in Gazipaşa after a technical check; this is a service job, not a Solar Nexo installation. The example shows the importance of regular maintenance and timely intervention. For details you can read our article on solar energy, maintenance and inverter replacement in Gazipaşa.

Battery life depends on chemistry and use. In LiFePO4 modules the cycle life declared by manufacturers varies by product; because different figures appear in sources, rely only on the value in the brand and model datasheet.

The difference between permanent degradation and temporary loss

Not every drop in production means the panel is ageing. Dust, pollen, bird droppings and shading, temperature and inverter settings reduce production temporarily; it returns with cleaning or correction. Permanent degradation, by contrast, comes from slow change in the cell material and does not return. If your production falls markedly within a year, the cause is far more likely to be soiling, shading, an inverter fault or a connection problem than degradation. To make this distinction you need a monitoring system and an annual comparison: comparing the same month's production with the same month of the previous year and with the sunshine conditions in that month is the most practical way to catch a problem early.

What should you look at when reading a warranty document?

  • Are the product and performance warranty periods written separately? Do not let the same number blur the two warranties.
  • Is the performance warranty linear or stepped? Check the year-1 and final-year percentages.
  • Who gives the warranty? The panel manufacturer and the installing company take on different obligations; ask separately about the workmanship warranty.
  • What are the conditions of the warranty? Installation contrary to the installation manual can void the warranty.
  • What is the manufacturing date? In licence-exempt applications, main equipment must have been manufactured within the last five years.

On its website Solar Nexo mentions the panel manufacturer's linear performance warranty of up to 30 years; this is the manufacturer's performance warranty, not the installing company's product warranty. Because we could not find reliable official data on the resale value of panels, we give no figure on this. For ways to extend lifespan, see our article on ways to extend the life of solar panels.

Conclusion

Solar panel lifespan is defined by a performance curve that can be longer than the warranty period but declines by roughly 0.4-0.5% a year. The warranty values in the datasheet show the lower limit, while field conditions in Antalya vary with temperature, salt and installation quality. The right panel choice, ventilated mounting and regular maintenance are the basic way to protect long-term production. Frequently asked questions

How many years do solar panels last?

Panels generally produce for 25-30 years or longer, but their power falls a little every year. The TommaTech 605 W TOPCon model has a 30-year performance warranty and at least 87.4% of power is guaranteed in year 30. Real lifespan varies with temperature, installation quality, maintenance and environmental conditions, so no firm number of years can be promised for lifespan.

How much efficiency do solar panels lose each year?

According to datasheets, about 0.4-0.45%. In the TommaTech 144TN, power falling from 99% in year 1 to 87.4% in year 30 means a decline of about 0.4% a year. In NREL's 2012 review, median degradation for field modules was found to be 0.5% a year; however, this study is old and differs by product.

What is the difference between product warranty and performance warranty?

The product warranty covers manufacturing and material defects; for example, 15 years for the TommaTech 144TN. The performance warranty commits that the panel will not fall below a certain power level; 30 years for the same model. The two can have different periods, so you should read both separately from the document. Also find out who the warranty-giving institution is and how to make a claim.

Does Antalya's heat shorten solar panel lifespan?

High temperature temporarily lowers panel power while operating; it is not permanent ageing. By calculation, in a 34 °C ambient the cell reaches about 65 °C and the power loss in TOPCon is about 12% relative to STC. Mounting that leaves ventilation behind the panel limits this effect; panel lifespan depends mainly on manufacturing quality and installation.

Is an inverter's life shorter than a panel's?

Generally yes. The standard warranty on TommaTech inverters is 5 years from the invoice date, while the panel performance warranty is 30 years. In a 25-30 year system it is therefore sensible to plan at least one inverter replacement. Regular maintenance and monitoring allow faults to be noticed early; adding the replacement cost to the budget from the start avoids surprises.

Can a licence-exempt solar application be made with second-hand or old panels?

No. Article 37/6 of the licence-exempt electricity generation regulation requires main equipment such as panels, inverters and batteries to have been manufactured within the last five years. An application with old-stock or second-hand products can cause problems, so ask in writing for the manufacturing date of the equipment in the quote and keep it together with the warranty document.

What can be done to extend the life of panels?

Quality equipment and correct installation are the most important steps: airflow should be left behind the panel, fasteners should be chosen to suit salty air and the installation manual should be followed. Regular maintenance, cleaning and tracking monitoring data also help detect faults early. Corrosion checks are especially important on coastal roofs in Antalya, and fasteners should be reviewed in annual maintenance.
